How to Register a Business Name in Mauritius (Step by Step)

Your business name is your first marketing asset. In Mauritius, you register (or reserve) it via CBRIS (companies.govmu.org). This guide covers name rules, the two-step check, and what to do if your favourite name is taken.

Rules on what you can call your business

The Registrar will reject names that:

• Are identical or too similar to an existing business.
• Are misleading (e.g. using "Bank", "Insurance", or "Government" without a licence).
• Contain offensive words.
• Suggest official endorsement you don't have.

Descriptive names ("Curepipe Bakery") are easier to approve than purely generic ones.

Step 1 — Check availability

On CBRIS, use the Name Search tool before anything else. Try three variants: your first choice, a shorter version, and one with a district or descriptor added.

Step 2 — Reserve or register

You have two paths:

• Reserve the name for up to 2 months (Rs 500) if you're not ready to register.
• Register directly as part of your BRN or company incorporation.

Once registered, the name is protected under the Business Registration Act.

Trademarks vs business names

Registering a business name at the CBRD does not give you nationwide brand protection. For that, register a trademark with the Industrial Property Office of Mauritius — usually Rs 1,500–5,000 per class.
